To Dye or Not to Dye?

     When your carpet begins to age you may notice “Gray Areas” or “Sun Bleached” lines. Your Hometown Professional Carpet Cleaner is called to the scene to clean your carpets. When they are gone and your carpets are dry, you may see “gray areas” in your carpet. Just what are those “gray areas?” You may ask yourself.  

     We must go to the beginning when the carpets are manufactured. Before the dyes are added to your carpet from the factory, your carpets are gray. This  coloring process may take place at different stages of production, depending on the desired visual effect. Some carpets are put into vats of water after production and boiled while dyes are mixed into the container. This is known as the Beck Process. Another continuous dyeing method, rolls and sprays dyes onto finished carpet. Still another, pre-dyeing, takes place before the carpet is processed. The actual yarn that will be used in the tufting process is dyed beforehand, which allows for uniform color.

     Before complaining about “Gray Areas,” or “Sun Bleaching” call and ask your Professional Hometown Carpet Cleaner if he has a solution to your carpet problem. They may recommend dying your carpets or a mild tint added to your carpet.

     So remember:  To Dye or Not to Dye, It’s up to you.

Spot cleaning carpets

     Do it yourself spot cleaning is sometimes good. It keeps the carpet looking good until you have time to call a professional to do the job. Remember, carpet manufactures recommend having your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year. Twice if you soil them frequently. Cleaning your carpet too often can hurt your carpet and shorten it’s life-span. One of the problems that we come across is when homeowners clean their carpet themselves and leave behind a terrible residue in the carpet. This is especially true when using certain name brand carpet spot removers.

     These products leave a residue that temporarily leaves the spot looking good and giving you a false sense of satisfaction for a job well done. However, within a few weeks or even days, the spot is replaced with a grayish-blackish spot the continues to collect more dirt as the spot has traffic over it. When these spots are rinsed out,  a sticky residue may be left behind that is much worse than the original spot. Sometimes a damp paper or cloth towel will do the job without leaving a sticky residue. 

     One other item to note, keep in mind before you start pouring store bought cleaners on that stain that may do more damage and end up costing more money than if you just simply called a professional.

Your Jute Rug

    Jute, also called hessian or burlap, is a natural fiber found in clothing, luggage, and home furnishings. You may find Jute in the back of some older carpets and rugs. Jute carpets have some of the softest fibers in the world and feature a gold shine in their natural state. Jute may also be dyed in many colors to provide different shapes and patterns in colorful carpets.

    Some manufacturers may mix jute fibers with synthetic fibers to create a stronger, more durable longer lasting carpet. However, jute rugs can become discolored, stained, or mildewed and you may need to know how to clean a jute rug with proper care. So it’s best to consult with your Hometown Professional Carpet Cleaning Specialist.

Custom Rugs and Pet Fur

    Your Custom Rugs and Pet Fur is not usually a good combination. You vacuum several times a week to keep it clean and free from pet fur. Sometimes that isn’t enough. Especially  today when the temperatures begin to rise, your pets love the indoors and your favorite rug to keep cool. 

     Your pets begin to shed their winter coat and a good amount will end up on your rugs, the darker the rug the more fur seems to be there. Allergens are brought into the home and may sit for months after the winter. Carpet mites are settling in and growing.

Blog, Wax On - Wax Off

Wax On – Wax Off

A candle spills over on your carpet, if there are flames involved…Immediately Extinguish!  Do not panic, your carpet is not lost forever.  There are several methods that can be used to remove the wax:

1. Ice method, this method would basically make the candle hard and brittle by placing a small amount of ice on the wax then breaking it up into small pieces and then vacuuming.

2. The second is a chemical cold method. A spray that freezes the was on contact, then breaking it up into smaller pieces then vacuuming. This method sometimes may take up some of the carpet with it.

3. The 3rd method is my method of choice, which I spent years perfecting this technique. This is the total opposite of the two treatments above. This is a hot melt treatment. 

This hot melt treatment actually melts the wax into a damp terry-cloth towel. If a dry towel is used, it may melt into the carpet fibers. A small caution if using this method: The heat; if left on the same area for too long,  may remove the coloring from the carpet. 

Whatever technique you decide to use, if doing it yourself… please consult your local Professional Carpet Cleaning Specialist first.
